Rules for Simulcasting betting:

When playing in simulcast centers we should think about some guidelines to use for our wagering. I was speaking with a fan at Churchill and he said that he wasn't going back to the Sports Spectrum, Louisville's simulcast parlor, because he lost a lot of money every time he went. After listening to his story, I told him it wasn't the Sports Spectrum's fault he was losing too much, but that he needed to manage his actions a little better. With that in mind, I am going to lay out a few rules I follow and maybe it will help some of you.

1. Pick out a couple tracks to wager on and stick to them, don't go chasing your money at tracks you have no idea what is going on there. Simulcasting is like going to a buffet, you eat everything at the buffet and you will get sick. Same goes for your wagering, stay where you have a feel for the action.

2. Never take more money with you than you want to lose for the day. Figure when you leave home the money you have is disposable and when it is gone, pack it in. Never borrow money or use an ATM machine at a race track or betting parlor.

3. Do your homework, check the tracks you are playing daily, even if you are only a weekend player. Check the stats and see who is doing the good and who is having a bad streak.

If you follow those few rules you have a better chance of surviving.

Good luck and remember, as always wager wisely.

Handicapping Tips

Someone asked what was the best way to make trifectas and exactas with a small investment. I am a big believer in keying a horse first and second. A good friend who is a very good professional handicapper made a statement about exotic bets and it makes sense. He said when keying exacts and trifectas first and second "You can be wrong and still be right"

My method is to take one horse, and key him first and second with four others. For a one dollar trifecta, this costs $12 for each play. For example, use the #1 on top of the 2-3-4-5 second and 2-3-4-5 third. This is called a $1 trifecta key. The next step is a part wheel, using the 2-3-4-5 with the #1 in the second place and the 2-3-4-5 in the third position.  This also cost $12. Your key horse must finish first or second and the other two positions have to be filled in by one of your other horses.

If you feel that there is one horse you like very much and two more that one or the other should be second, then you can get more bang for your buck by keying #1 on top, with #2 and #3 second and as many as you want on the bottom, or third position. If you have a 10 horse field, and want to wheel them all on the bottom, it will cost you $16, and using the #2 and #3 on top with the #1 second and all on the bottom cost the same $16.

Exacts can be keyed the same way, using your subject horse,#1 with as many as you want on the bottom and then use the same numbers on top of the #1 or key horse. I always use them first and second, it isn't a very good feeling when you have a 10-1 shot as your key and he gets beat in a photo by one of your other horses and you don't have the exacta. I hope this has helped someone, I love tris and exacts, they can be very rewarding for a small player.
